The Flowing House: A.D.U. Design and Construction Set
The objective of this project was to design and produce a construction drawing set for a new accessory dwelling unit located at 1572 Villard Street, Eugene, OR 97403. My project consisted of a 465 S.F., 1 bed, 1 bath residential unit that was inspired by both Japanese design principles and also the rainy climate of Eugene, Oregon. The project aims to create a space that is one with its context while also being carefully crafted to enrich the private living area of its users. Due to its location on the site, I decided to envision a shared courtyard that serves as the glue between the existing building on the site and the new A.D.U. design. This coupled with the private garden on the North end of the property and the internal courtyard allows users the opportunity to be social or to get lost in their own world. The exterior spaces were curated to bleed directly through the house, creating a seamless connection between the outside world and the interior spaces. The single pitched roof allows for ample lighting from the North and East facades, while the Southwest glazing allows for natural lighting throughout the day, even during the colder months. In addition my project utilized the major opportunity for rain water collection through the use of both the pitched roof and also ground level drainage that leads to an underground cistern for gray water reuse on the property. Conclusively, the layout of the open floor plan and the various details of the design work together to create a beautifully crafted space for its residents. The design incorporates both passive house framing and advanced framing.
