Detailing a Double Facade for The Knight Science Campus
THE KNIGHT CAMPUS FOR ACCELERATING SCIENTIFIC IMPACT WILL CHANGE THE PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON IN PERPETUITY. WHILE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE RESEARCH AND TEACHING SPACES WITH THE KNIGHT CAMPUS ARE OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE, THE UNIVERSITY SEEKS TO CONSTRUCT A SET OF BUILDINGS THAT ARE ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT, AND FORWARD LOOKING IN THEIR EXPRESSION. THE DESIGN LOOKS AT A PART OF THE SOUTH FACADE ON THE EAST TOWER TO EXPLORE POTENTIAL FACADE VOCABULARY. THE LANGUAGE USES A TERRA COTTA RAINSCREEN IN FRONT OF SOLID WALL ELEMENTS TO CONTRACT WITH THE LARGE EXPANSES OF GLASS AT THE LABORATORY BAYS. a DOUBLE FACADE IS IMPLEMENTED AT THE STACKED LABS TO CONTROL LIGHT AND HEAT GAIN. THE TASK WAS TO DEVELOP AN ENCLOSURE TO MEET THESE NEEDS.
